Northwestjunkie,

This particular forest in the photo had been partially logged. I took this from an abandoned logging road. They didn't cut the trees on this road, however, or those higher on on the mountain.

Idaho and Montana have several million acres of old growth forests, but not very much lower elevation old growth forest, especially in areas where the precipitation is high.

It was logged outside Glacier National Park and the lower elevations of some of the designated Wilderness areas.

People are coming to realize that there are some old growth juniper and pinyon pine stands in the more arid mountains.

There are also some very ancient whitebark pine stands at high elevations, but this pine is rapidly dying out due to global warming and attack by whitebark pine blister rust (an accidentally introduced pathogen).

Compare this photo to the one I took filled with greenery and wildflowers on the first day of summer 2008. Here it is exactly 2 months later.

Pennington,

It must have been temporary glitch. I found the yellow star next to "Photos by Pennington", clicked it, and you appeared in my list of favorites.
