These, the Dunedin Municipal Chambers (the Dunedin Town Hall) were built in 1886 on the site of the first hospital. The old wooden building ceased to be used as a hospital when the hospital was transferred to the imposing 1865 Exhibition Building a few blocks to the east. The bell tower seen here was lowered as a safety risk in the early 1970s. But the result was an architectural eyesore. The tower was restored to its original glory in the late 1980s.
