This is a former US Air Force transport, a YC-122. It was built in 1953 at the Chase Aircraft Company factory at Trenton Mercer County Airport in New Jersey. Only nine were built. The design was a metal version of a troop-carrying glider with engines added. After serving as a troop transport, this airplane did crop-dusting and fire-fighting work in Pennsylvania before being sold to stolen car smugglers. It was on one of their runs when the fuel ran out.

Konashen is a village situated about six miles NE of the convergence of the Wapuau and the Kamoa Rivers, the headwaters of the Essequibo River that runs northward, bisecting the country of Guyana.

Kamerang was the staging point for the aborted Upper Mazaruni Project, a large hydro-electric dam planned for the region in the early 1970s. Mt. Tulameng is in the background.
