My apologies. Tamaraparani River is an east flowing river originating in Tirunelveli District of Tamilnadu and confluencing with Bay of Bengal in Thoothukudi District. By reading your comment I know now that there is also another Tambaraparani river which is a west flowing river in Kanyakumari District and Kodayar is only a tributary to it. Thanks for educating me.
The Mission Hospital at Marthandam was established in the year 1883 by Mr.P. Vethamonickam, one of the Medical Evangelists trained by Dr.T.S. Thompson. It was first located in a small building near the present Thoduvetty Market. Due to the increase in the input of patients, it was shifted to the present site in the year 1892. Thanks to the untiring efforts of Dr. Jacob Jesudhason. :: It was formally opened by Rev. J. Knowles of Parasala in the year 1892 under the chairmanship of Dr. S. Sargood Fry. After the retirement of Dr. Jacob Jesudhason, Drs. Daniel Edwards, Simon Fletcher, V. Devanayagam and S. Yesudian worked in various periods. Then Dr. S.G. Manuel took charge of this hospital. Many improvement works were carried out during this period. Devan Ragaviah, who visited the hospital during this period, wrote in the visitor's book, "As long as the Marthandam Mission Hospital exists, there is no need for a Government Hospital at Kuzhithurai".
After Dr. S.G. Manuel, Dr.W. Samuel, Dr. S.G. Nallathampy, Dr. S. Ambrose, Dr. Y. Abraham and Dr. J. Sundaram continued to work. Dr. G.M. Moses succeeded in the year 1944. The hospital showed rapid growth during this period. 20-bedded Maternity Ward was opened by Mr. Miss Thompson in the year 1946. Dr. G.M. Moses was the first Indian Medical Suprintendant for two years from 1953-1955 and he retired on 31-12-1960 after 40 years of meritorious and dedicated service. Later Dr.J.C. Edwards, Dr. Jeyachandra Edward and Dr. Robert worked for brief periods. Dr.(Mrs) Beulah Justin, M.B.B.S. joined the Medical Mission on 15-4-1970 and continued to work as Medical Officer in-Charge. Inspite of many limitations, the hospital has shown a steady progress in the input of patients especially maternity patients.
With God's guidance and mercy, a School of Nursing was established in the year 1993 with an annual intake of 20 students. The special initiative taken by the Bishop Rt. Rev. G. Christdhas, M.A., B.D. has to be remembered for ever. Our sincere thanks are also due to Mr. Horst Kowski, administrator, Christian Mission Service for his help in the construction of the students hostel. To honour this gesture, the Nursing School has been named as Mrs. Ingrid Kowski School of Nursing. 5 students from C.M.S. are admitted annually as per the agreement. Our sincere thanks and gratitude to the well wishers from Germany and Switzerland.
We need dedicated Doctors to show the Love and the Healing touch of Jesus and also specialists in the field of Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics and the Orthopedists Surgery are the need of this hour for uplifting and reviving this Hospital.
