The name of the little deaf girl is Alice Cogswell. The statue depicts her clutching a book to her breast standing atop hands signing "light." She was the inspiration for Thomas H. Gallaudet's crusade for educating the deaf and others which led to the building of Hartford's Connecticut Asylum for the Education and Instruction of Deaf and Dumb Persons in 1817. His son, Edward, was later instrumental in establishing Gallaudet College in Washington, D.C., the world's only liberal arts college for the deaf.
