In the nineteenth century there were 35 pubs in Wapping High Street at one time or another. Today there are only two - but the Captain Kidd is not one of the original 35. It is a 1988 conversion by Samuel Smith's Brewery of a former workshop. A proper riverside pub nonetheless.
Established in 1520, during the reign of King Henry VIII. Known originally as the 'Devil's Tavern', it took the name Prospect of Whitby in 1777. The frontage on to the road side dates from about 1880, but this view from the River Thames side shows a much older building behind the frontage.

This pub was established in 1583 and the present building dates from 1720 - a proper bit of old East London.
