OK then, Ernest Urban Trevor Huddleston, 1913-1998, was born in Bedford and was an English Anglican bishop. He was the Bishop of Stepney in London before becoming the second Archbishop of the Church of the Province of the Indian Ocean. He was best known for his anti-apartheid activism. He arrived in Cape Town in 1940 leaving in 1955 to return to England some say because of the controversy he caused by speaking out against apartheid. There is no doubt he was an enormous thorn in the side of the apartheid regime and the spokesman for the anti-apartheid movement for a considerable period. In 1960 he became Bishop of Masasi in Tanzania where he worked for eight years before becoming, as mentioned, Bishop of Stepney and in 1978 he was appointed Bishop of Mauritius, a diocese of the Province of the Indian Ocean and later that year was elected Archbishop. He retired in 1983 and continued his anti-apartheid work and in the 1998 New Years Honours he was appointed Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George(KCMG). He died in Yorkshire later that year and there is a window in memory of him in Lancing College chapel. So now we know!!! Phew!!!

A view up the High Street with the Standard public house on the left with its Laurel & Hardy statues either side of the door!
