I agree - Fall is the best time of year to sail around here, though you do have to be mindful of the Santa Anas and the occasional rainshower.

Cueva Valdez is a fine anchorage that we visit frequently on our way to Painted Cave. For more info go to Sail Channel Islands

Lady's Harbor on Santa Cruz is a fair weather anchorage. It can accommodate one 40' yacht.

This view shows the approach from the west. The anchorage opens up to the right of the rock in the foreground.

For more info see {Sail Channel Islands}(http://http://www.sailchannelislands.com/CIcruisingguide/Channel_Islands_Cruising_Guide_overview.php)

A pod of 8 - 10 Finwhales shadowed our boat for almost an hour.

It's the first time we've encountered Finwhales, 2nd largest whale in the world.

The played like dolphins, swimming all around us and occasionally turning on their backs.

We think they smiled and waved.

You can sail there with Sail Channel Islandsand maybe see one of these enormous creatures .. or maybe a gray whale or a humpback.

The caliche forest is the remains of a prehistoric forest that existed in the days of the pygmy mammoth, which, like the modern sheep, totally denuded the island.

You can sail to the island with Sail Channel Islands

On fall days, the beach at the foot of Nidever Canyon looks tropical. Without a wetsuit, it's too chilly for us. But the scenery on this (pretty much) uninhabited island is spectacular.

You can sail there aboard Sancerre with Sail Channel Islands

The Nidever canyon trail used to be a ranch road, capable of handling a Model-T. Today, it's a hike and half to the Ranger Station, the Cabrillo monument, the Caliche forest and points beyond.

You can sail there with Sail Channel Islands
