I think this shot is looking south toward the Chalk Badlands. Notice the small pile of talus that is left at the base of the tower. We visit this monument each year, around Memorial Day, and have noted that the chalk that falls off the tower does not accumulate at the base, but dissolves in the rain. I agree with Steve Adams, we have been there when the roads were wet, and it was almost impossible to get close to Castle Rock even in a 4 W D vehicle.
