This is known as the spindle to to Tohono O'odham tribe. They believe the world revolves around it an maybe their's does as it's in the middle of their reservation
I know this spot. It is 1 or 2 parcels from my land. Wish I had access to the rest of my parcel but it is on the North side of highway and there is no roads there and just fenced off. Don't get out there as much due to the illegal activities. Was out there a couple months ago and did not get the peacedful feeling I used to get there. I make sure now that I am with someone when going there. Thinking of selling my land. Any buyers???? Thanks to fourxfourfever for the history report as I have been years trying to find out more about that area. I do know it is a ghost town now.
Yeah, I saw a similar news story (http://www.kpho.com/news/25265353/detail.html). I climbed this peak back in '08 and didn't notice any suspicious activity on the mountain itself. I wouldn't make the trip again alone though.
up until recently, as in 2 years ago, the cafe and store was named The Burnt Bun. also Pete's corner was a notoriously known truckstop back before the Interstate.. it was known as the place you could get anything you wanted..
