That's a shame. We're slowly losing our history.

That would be amazing.

This would be looking north on Commercial from about 2nd or 3rd Street, one block west of the river levee of the Ohio river. The Ford dealership was right behind where this picture was taken over the shoulder of the photographer for example. The 601 Club was down on the right at the corner of these storefronts.

I too remember all of these stores when they were open. Isn't that the dimestore at the left end of that block w the red facade? This would be the block between 9 th and 10 th streets on Commercial. Every one of these stores were open and doing a good business in the early 70's. That dimestore had an upstairs also, it was big.

It's sad to see Cairo decline to such conditions. As a child I remember going to Cairo almost every sat. w/ my parents to shop & get groceries and remember it being a bustling town with several car dealerships, a strong downtown area on 8th street and Commercial ave. There were several restaurants and bars, the Wonder Market, IGA, Elias True Value, Khoury Bros. Ladies store, the record store/ Hallmark card store, Rhode Burford furniture store, the pet store, the dime store, the little old man who sold grilled hamburgers out of the Ford model-t car by the dime store, the florist, the fabric store, Mac's and Shemwell's BBQ restaurant's, McGinnis Yamaha and retail store, the Speakeasy, the Dairy Hut, I could go on and on! I know it was in decline even then but todays condition is far worse than even I could imagine. I feel like the right investment group could come into the downtown area and re-hab several of the old structures into gambling/bar and restaurant establishments and employ local people and really do so at a tremendous savings in the long run. The charm of the downtown is still there in the architecture of the remaining buildings and the brick streets are there under the layers of pavement. It could easily be comparable to Paducah or Cape's downtown or St. Charles, Mo if it was done right. Employing local people would be the key to the success. This is where Cairo divided itself in the 60's and 70's when the race riots almost destroyed the town. Cairo doesn't need a hand-out, just a hand up. A mind set that incorporated the town's locals into the workforce would be key in it's success. Don't repeat the mistakes made in the 70's and alienate the townsfolk and you'll be successful.

Wow, I've never noticed that. There must be a cross street on the other side of the parkway. Otherwise, where is that car going? Funny picture though.
