Ian Stehbens's conversations

Thank you for your special commentary, Peter. You can see from my photos that on this occasion we had wonderful - glorious weather while we were there. I have climbed a few cliffs in my time, but never when it is raining, and I certainly would never have attempted to climb ice! I'll leave more adventurous Aussies to join the Kiwis to do such things.

Ian

Greetings, Peter.

It is a joy to receive your message as a response to this photo and the couple of brief conversations. I have a special friend in Turkey and have enjoyed my brief time in Turkey very much, so I endorse your comments about the origins of tulips, as well as Kiwi fruit. The Chinese name for the fruit when translated into English certainly needed to be replaced if the fruit was to be marketed!

Ian

Thank you for sharing your memories, Peter. I am delighted that my images have provoked them.

As I am sure you are aware, the most important publication that tells of the fortress and the massacre is Paul W Dale's edition of William Mariner's The Tonga Book. To that and other minor, mostly oral stories and local versions, I have undertaken fieldwork at the relevant sites. My professional background includes geography, and I used my research skills to interpret the landscape remnants and to correlate the Tonga Book stories of events and movements with distances and the landscape.

I believe this is very significant archaeological site and it and the sites of other fortresses should be actively preserved and protected.

I am pleased that I have been able to encourage you and your son's discovery of your history. Very pleased.

Thanks,

Ian
