I I grew up at Rosedale and Santa Rita Sts in the early 1960s the car lot at this location had decent cars and vanished in the 80s. This sign was new at the time of the Kennedy assasination. The letters flashed in sequence C-A-R-S,CARS off-on Red, blue green, yellow were the colors, I have 8mm color film of the sign in operation somewhere. I'm a white dude who lived in the Fruitvale-Fairfax area for many years I have many happy memories of my kid life in the flatlands. People like myself could see the war conducted against us by the well heeled hill people. Foothill Blvd. had ACME Donuts one of the best donut places. The CAR sign is about directly across the street from its former location. I left the bay in '93, my parents lfet their house on Santa Rita St. in '92 after living in that neighborhood for more than 50 years. Too bad that the only Euros left are the Montclair types working class Euros a just not around we were once an important part of the mix too bad you never got to know us.
