At the eastern end of the Las Vegas valley is Frenchman Mountain (sometimes erroneously called Sunrise Mountain), and at the foot of that mountain is the Las Vegas Nevada Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, popularly known as the Mormons. It was built in 1985 as the 43rd LDS temple.
The strata visible on Frenchman Mountain are considerably older. In fact, one of these strata is an instance of the Great Unconformity, where rocks from the Cambrian era, 500 million years old, are directly on top of rocks 1.7 billion years old, a gap of 1.2 billion years. The Great Unconformity is also visible at the Grand Canyon and it appears here because Frenchman Mountain is essentially a huge slab of rock that has been faulted and tilted upward.
