The East House was built about 1817 with from 70-100 members living within, men on the west or left side as you enter and women on the east or right side as you enter the building through the front doors. This is different from other buildings within the community and in other Shaker villages. Men typically entered and used the staircases on the right side and opposite door and staircase was for the women. However it is noted that all of the out buildings relating to mens work was on the west side of the building and the ones used by the women were on the east and they would not pass over to the other side of the building as in Shaker tradition. Each family unit at Shakertown had its own barns, gardens, washhouses, shops and orchards but willingly shared with others when necessary.
