Cumulonimbus clouds usually come in sets, so what surprised me most about this one, Berend, was it was solitary. Thanks.
Thansk, Berend. I was very pleased that this recent trip to Malaita was on the more modern vessel, a catamaran! Much more enjoyable than my earlier voyages on the Saalia.
Many Solomon Islanders love to sing.
There is a lot in this photo for me, Berend. And there is a big story that lies behind my understanding of Solomon Islands and its people. I have been privileged to have worked with and observed the people of Solomon Islands.
Thank you for your wonderful compliments and affirmation, May. We may never meet in person, though I would that that could happen, however I assure you that I have often felt that I have walked with you in Emmental, Engadin, England and other places because of the creativity of your images and the love of people and place that you express through those images.
One of the small number of Roman-catholic churches still doing service in Arnhem, is the Martinus Chapel or Polish Chapel. In 1967 the chapel was renovated by Roman-catholic Polish. The chapel is currently leased by the Polish Catholic Mission and the current inventory of the chapel is owned by the Polish community. You see, Polish really are devout and caring, not only in their mother-country.
I'm glad you visited my virtual Hernhut. Thank you.
You told me once your roots lay in Europe too, so it must be interesting to learn more about your forbears.
You probably read also the story of my mother's quest - she was baptised Dutch Reformed - for a more humanitarian religious home. And how she didn't find it in any church, sect or 'brotherhood'. She ended up (trough my father) at the socialist Peace Movement instead, and later in the Women's Peace Movement and the humanist movement. That, and my (limited) Bible-knowledge and my love for storytelling, history, reading, writing and poetry is my mother's legacy to me. :)
Pleasure to have met you.
You could lose your way just coming home, either by road or by canal!
There are many who migrate to the coast and then want to live by the water. This way the water comes to them.
As sea levels rise and storm events increase in intensity, the canal estates may become like Venice! However this area has been engineered with several metres of freeboard.
This is urban Australians truly clinging to the seaboard!
It has been painful, Berend, but the country seems to be heading in the right direction now. Some of the changes that have flowed since the conflict have seen some justice prevail where there was injustice, albeit inadvertently and unintended, before. It was special, once again, to be among these local communities immediately after having been in similar communities on Malaita (the other side of the conflict).
