If one continues south along this state highway, they come to the switchbacks that send the road back north on the other side of the ridge... the area of the switchbacks, and just beyond, is truly spectacular. The view in all directions is incomparable. As fine a view as one might hope to find anywhere.
this was shot after sunset the same day as the other pic you commented on... the moon is just on the horizon, about 1/3 from the right edge. it was seriously windy up there, something I didn't expect, but pictures came out great all night. I shot the Milky Way after all light was gone from the sky... images of that here (you can see them on the map to the right if you zoom in a bit), and time lapse on youtube -->
I'm still learning how to do time-lapse of the Milky Way... how to adjust the exposures so that they all blend with each other... it's somewhat jerky, which I don't quite understand as I'm sure I didn't leave any frames out of the sequence... and there's some neat, anomalous, lights moving from top to bottom, just off to the left side of the video, two lights that appear and descend and then vanish. all I could think was a rotating pair of satellites, maybe Iridium?
Anyway, thanks for the sentiment, it was a rare treat to spend the night up there. A long, and sometimes hair-raising ride up there, too!
