Though I still don't know what it is, I had noticed this white thing from the road far below. Finally found a way up to it.

It was fun to hear that odd twangy, metallic sound of ice shifting..a sound I have not heard in years.

So much is visible from the Oregon Trail on these basalt cliffs, such as the full Highway 21 bridge. The Boise River is on the right. The New York canal, subject of Wallace Stegner's Pulitzer prize winning historical novel, Angle of Repose, begins right here at the Diversion Dam. The City is in the distance beyond Surprise Valley.

This springtime attraction at Lucky Peak Dam is called the Rooster Tail. It happens when approximately 5,000 cfs of extra water is released through one tube.
