This is one of the deep mine shafts left from when Terlingua was a mining town (late 1800s through 1940s). Cinnabar ore was mined from which mercury was refined. These shafts were open until the state of Texas had them covered with safety grates.
The cast and crew of the film "Giant" stayed here when some of the exteriors were filmed on location near Marfa in the late-1950s. The cast included, Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson and James Dean.
