In fact the Vikings landed on the northern tip of this island about 1,000 years ago and settled into a community which today is known as L'Anse aux Meadows, though the residents eventually died out. So there certainly is an historical connection to Norway here.
My evening out on the town (Port-aux-Basques) was a photographic conclusion to the most exciting and rewarding part of our Summer 2016 family road trip. This was my last capture. I didn't want the discovery to end, and the slow waning of light was sad to me. The next morning we would be boarding the ferry to leave Newfoundland, but my heart was not ready. Only God knows if we'll ever be back in this lifetime. I said my goodbye to the island and turned toward my car to head back to the hotel. firstname.lastname@example.org
Steven - beautiful. I think blue & gold are Australia's colours too, beautiful contrast. L&F, Heather.
Hey, Derek, long time since we've contacted each other! Thanks for your comment. Quidi Vidi is a must-visit if you ever fly into St. John's and only have time for staying local. I only wish I'd had time for more exploration.
This location is given a bit of a misnomer. The centre at which it sits is called Mile One, not Mile Zero. Canada now uses metric kilometres, not imperial miles. And the TransCanada Highway doesn't end here any longer, but at a location farther north, where it isn't convenient to put any formal mark intended for public visits. However, this site makes for a much better photo! So I'm appreciative that someone thought to commemorate it and that others made the effort to construct it. email@example.com
