The worlds largest flag is called "The Flag" and it is the flag of the United States of America. There is a picture of it on the internet in which it is draped over the high side of the Hoover Dam.

It reads, "ON THIS SPOT WAS THE YELLOW POPLAR TREE WHICH WAS THE FOCAL POINT OF THE AX MURDERS OF TWO UNITED NATIONS COMMAND OFFICERS, US ARMY CAPTAIN ARTHUR BONIFAZ AND FIRST LIEUTENANT MARK BARRETT, WHO WERE ATTACKED AND KILLED BY NORTH KOREAN GUARDS WHILE SUPERVISING A WORK PARTY TRIMMING THE TREE ON 18 AUGUST 1976". They were both posthumously promoted.
The monument sits on a round base. The round section is the actual diameter of the tree when it was cut to clear the view between guard towers during Operation Paul Bunyan only 3 days later.
I was on a Hawk Missile site that day. Just north west of Osan Air Base. Charlie Battery 1st Bn, 2nd ADA. I was at the firing console watching all the Military Air traffic fly up and down the DMZ. B52's out of Okinawa was dropping chaf. It freaked the North Koreans out. One plan was to bomb the tree, instead Operation Paul Bunyan was put into effect. The entire country was on alert. The 2nd ID was mobilized and moved to 38th parallel. A team use a 2 1/2 ton truck to move next to the Poplar tree and cut it down. I was at the spot this picture was taken in early 1977 and I saw the pictures of the killings taking place. One Picture showed one of the Officers dead and laying under the Deuce and a half, while The other was being held by a couple of North Koreans and a third was swinging the axe downward to his head. My Tour was August 76 through August 77. I had been in country only about two weeks.
"waka" is spelt correctly there above the door, it's Fijian for "root" of the Kava plant which can be pulverised together with dried stems which
give that refreshing drink called "Kava".
