I live in the desert southwest just to the north of what is called the 'bootheel' of New Mexico in Silver City, Grant County, and most of my pictures reflect subjects from that area (so far). To the south on Hwy.180, between Silver City and Deming, there is a state park called the City of Rocks while to the north, only 35 miles away, there is the largest wilderness area in the lower 48... the Gila Wilderness. Here there are juniper, pinon pine, ponderosa pine and oaks. There are some cactus here: agave, yucca, century plant, prickly pear... if one travels north on Hwy.15 there is a funky old mining town called Pinos Altos and after many twists and turns one comes to the junction of Hwy. 15 and Hwy. 35. The Gila Cliff Dwellings State Park lies north of this spot. Also, traveling north of Silver City on 180 one can visit the Catwalk State Park where a river has cut a narrow wedge between the rock walls. The Mogollon Mountains are visible from just north of Silver reaching their highest points near Pleasanton and Glenwood, again on Hwy. 180. Trails abound in the Gila Wilderness for hikiing or bicycling or longer backpacking excursions. _ To comment on myself... my name is legally Wind River, which I changed from my maiden name. I am an artist and amateur photographer. My name originated from many summers spent in the Wind River Mountains (Bridger Wilderness Area) of Wyoming where my family packed into the high country of granite and meadows rife with flowers, streams, rivers and many, many lakes... this was, let's see... I am 63 years old (sorry about the photo above; I hate to pose for photographs)... approximately in 1957 through 1960. The country was still wild and mostly unmarked by trails. We packed in on horseback to reach these areas some twenty miles or so from Pinedale, Wyoming. I fell in love with these mountains and took my name from them. I can still smell the sage, pine and meadows after a rain. It was intoxicating. _ I am hoping to take some trirps to the Four Corners area where New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado and Utah meet, literally, in one spot. One can visit Chaco Canyon with its ancient dwellings and petroglyphs, Canyon de Chelley, Monument Valley, Canyonlands, the slickrock country, Arches National Park and the Grand Canyon, to name a few of the more well-known sites. _ I was quite an athlete till some seven years ago. Among the pursuits of mine were rock climbing in Yosemite, running, cycling on and off road, hiking and backpacking, cross-country and downhill skiing, rollerblading and... windsurfing on the lakes of the eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains. I was part of a Search and Rescue team based in the Bay Area of California and was their 'honorary victim' for their practice rock rescues in various places in which I faked various traumas (really quite fun!). _ Being the daughter of a geologist/paleontologist, I developed early a love for rocks (large or small) from the time I was old enough to follow him. And so... rock climbing... and collecting gemstones in the raw and I have quite a large collection of gem quality pieces from here and there from all over the world. _ Photography came into my life relatively late and so I am struggling to learn all that I can. Anyone out there who can give me the name of a (Best!) book on photography??? Please send a message to windriver7911@gmail.com. _ My gallery on this site holds only shots that I feel are worthy of your viewing. I have many more. I would suggest the following to anyone new to Panoramio: take a look at both the favorite photographers and favorite photos of anyone you truly admire. If you do this you will find more and more photographers and images to add to your own Panoramio Favorites. I hope you will enjoy my small gallery as much as I enjoy looking at those you post here on this site. Keep your eyes open for the large and small and new and exciting ways of capturing those special shots. _ That's enough for now! _ Best Wishes and Happy Hunting!! _ River _
