wow, it is really nice to hear people talking about the Jonglei project. Actually, the bucket wheel you are seeing in this photo is the greatest landmark in my village. i was born about a kilometer away from where it is, in Jan 1984. a month later the constructed was forcefully stopped. i grew up along the canal until i left in 1991. the canal had no good intention for the local population. one horrific thing was that the canal was constructed without bridges for crossing to the other side. simply it was meant to confine the African-Sudanese to the western shore, a flooded area that was closer to the Nile from the west. The Arab-Sudanese would then be settled on the Eastern side where they would practice extensive agriculture as well as islamize the African-Sudanese. the project was done with the knowledge of America which was leaning towards Khartoum rulers of the time due to their relationship with the then Sudanese military leader Jaffer NIMEIRI who graduated from a military college in the USA. Such a callous ignorance is what makes most people hate American policies sometimes. Know after 2.5 million Sudanese died in the civil war, the US and its allies is trying to come to the South to Practice Agriculture. that stinks!!!!!

Just passed the bucket wheel today 16 feb 2010. Took a shot which is posted also. Should be up on google earth in a few days.
