The house pictured (on Third Street) WAS built by Charles Ingalls when they moved off the homestead and into town in 1887. The Surveyors' House is a different house and has been moved from where it stood on the shore of Silver Lake to another location in DeSmet. The Ingalls family stayed in the Surveyors' House the winter after the railroad had been built (1879) and before the town was built. The Long Winter was in 1880, and the Ingalls family moved from their homestead shanty (southeast of town) to the building Pa had built in town on the corner of Main (Calumet) and 2nd Street to have better protection from the cold and blizzards. Amazing true story!

These are not potable water towers for Masson. These are the 2 surge tanks for the hydro electric power station they are sitting on. The 2 tanks are sitting on both penstock (pipe) that brings water from the dam way above on Lievre river. The 2 tanks are to regulate the pressure in the penstock and absorb any shock (pressure) in them ex: when turbines are shut down, the pressure builds up in the penstock like a shock wave.
