I'd also like to comment after viewing all these pictures that they are excellent, beautiful photos. I'm really glad I came across them.

Back here to the left would be the building housing the diesel engines that powered the site. There were five or six big generators, can't remember exactly. This picture also shows the berms better. You can see now they come out at right angles every so often so as to make a three sided enclosure for the planes back in WWII if what we were told is correct.

You can see the berm lower left in the photo that I used to go out on. We were told they were built to shelter fighter planes during WWII.

That mini marina looks like the old swimming hole we had on Canton 1961 - 63. I remember the little hut to the right or one like it. I would swim there because it had a shark gate to keep them out from the lagoon.

The Cap Corrientes was a supply ship that would come in and dock just inside the channel . They had German officers and a Chinese crew. We'd get together and drink beer with them, lots of it (1961 - 63).

We had Murray Air there 61-63. If the food was too bad that night at the FAA chow hall we would go get a Murray Burger at the airport. One of the Gilbertese would be there to cook them on the little grill. Boy, did they taste good. I wonder if R. Murray above is the Murray Air?
