"Pretty far" is about a quarter mile hike from Lake Creek. The Pistol Creek scout is directly over the beginning of the rapid. No tripod was necessary, the viewpoint is pretty close. The EXIF info says this photo was taken with about a 62mm lens equivalent, practically a "normal" length lens.
There is another popular photo op on top of the large dry rock in the middle of the river at the tail of the rapid which you get to from river right, but you have to bail out of the current too quickly to get there, or else it's a long rock hop back upstream along a loose scree slope. Pistol Creek camp is immediately past the rapid around the corner on river left.
