Hi Ralph, this is really a stunning picture of the Sutherland sky! By the way, we did the trip into the "Hell" last week. Not far from the gamkaspoort Dam that you did with your canoe! Regards! Johan

Hi Ralph, I have also done the Whale Trail and your photo brings back very good memories of our walk! From your pictures I derive that you are an outdoor person and "trailer" par exellance! We have done it first week Sept 4 years ago and plan to walk it again end Sept 2009. This time with my digital camera! Regards! Johan

I started in the Nature Reserve, then through the neck to the north side. There's a Google Earth track of the route here

Thanks. Enter Jonkershoek Nature Reserve, take the road up to where it crosses the river and loops back, take the leftmost trail to Bergriviersnek - about a 2-hour hike to the saddle from the start of the trail.

I camped here once, way back when. A group of us as boy scouts came out here on an overnight hike, and slept at junction pools. There used to be this wood skeletoned, grass roofed hut built here, and on that night, an accident with a candle that fell over, resulted in us all spending the rest of the night putting out what could have been a very large bush fire...
