My grandfather was the keeper of the pictured light. The location of the lighthouse is on what is called Chief's Island north of the structure seen on google earth. 43 20' 29" N 124 22' 30" W

There used to be two different lightkeeper houses. One was razed in 1940. This one photographed here remains. This might sound like a funny question.. in this photo, you can see the razed house is on the right, nearest the camera.

But there's a huge fenced yard, the razed house being at the east. At the present we have the the surviving house sitting at the spot which appears to be where the razed house stood. Was the surviving house moved??

A beautiful spot, nicely captured. A recent snow dump too. Tekapo is becoming a destination, rather than a stop off, on the way to Mt Cook and Queenstown. The newly opened (2008)hot springs complex is proving a winner. It would be a pity though, if the developers turn it into just another tourist town. Roy Hosking.
