I'm pleased you worked there. It looks like a nice place to work. Too bad the citizenry of Albany can't enjoy the place, too. Anyway, apparently there has been some misinformation bandied about. The "farmer" was Edward Gill, who purchased the property in 1890 and ran a renowned nursery there, the Gill Nursery. Upon his death in 1909, a relation, his son, I believe, continued on with the nursery unitl UC purchased the land in 1928. I'm unaware of any quid pro quo regarding the use of the land. Since then, the University as carried on agricultural research there, in conjunction with the USDA, and yes indeed, some very significant agricultural means and methods have been developed there. However, times have changed. Albany is no longer a rural outpost on the shores of SF Bay, like it was 100 years ago. Albany is very much part of a vibrant urban environment and it's time to address the needs of the local community. I happen to believe that youth sports fields along with a public park and some retail establishments along San Pablo Avenue (which will add to the city's woefully low sales tax base) are more inline with the community needs rather than a privately operated organic farm.
