Hi Lordmagic, good to hear from you. To be honest, I have absolutley no idea of the purpose of the holes, I always thought the large one looked like a fireplace although obviously there is no chimney. I'd be interested to know if you find anything out!

I think I know which roads you mean - Thursden and Blake dean? I've had a few "moments" there in icy conditions! I was up there yesterday and they were flying rocks in by helicopter to stop people driving over the edge. You should have a drive over Hardknott in winter - very scary - but do-able!
