Hi Lordmagic, good to hear from you. To be honest, I have absolutley no idea of the purpose of the holes, I always thought the large one looked like a fireplace although obviously there is no chimney. I'd be interested to know if you find anything out!
Thanks Kev, your Ian told me the book was written by your dad. They've only got it in reference at Burnley Library so not had a chance to look at it yet.
I think I know which roads you mean - Thursden and Blake dean? I've had a few "moments" there in icy conditions! I was up there yesterday and they were flying rocks in by helicopter to stop people driving over the edge. You should have a drive over Hardknott in winter - very scary - but do-able!
