However, Hadrian's Wall was originally 80 Roman miles(73.5 statute miles or 117 kilometres) long and stood at approximately five to six metres (16–20 ft) high and three metres (9.7ft)wide (not including the ditches & forts). Built around AD122, it took about six years to complete and was the third such wall to be built by the Romans (to prevent military raids on Roman Britain by the Pictish tribes of Scotland)to the north. Parts of the wall where constructed of turf and the rest of stone.
