I've also been to 'sandfly bay'. But it was near Kaiteriteri in Abel Tasman National Park (40° 55' 36.27" S 173° 3' 21.90" E). Seems to be a quite common name ;-].

The swell was real small that day so I was able to anchor my skiff offshore the south end of the beach and paddle a little kayak to shore.
