Logan, a Cayuga sachem, was likely born near Shamokin, Pennsylvania, and he died near Circleville, Ohio. There is a state historical marker at Fort Hill Cemetery in Auburn, New York, that indicates that the site is the "traditional" birthplace of Logan. Not so. This claim first surfaced in the 1930s, and there is no evidence whatsoever to support it. The erection of the obelisk in Logan's honor was part of an effort to create historical connections for the then rather new cemetery. The obelisk recalls the speech of Logan, cited by Thomas Jefferson in his "Notes on Virginia" as outstanding oratory. "Who is there to mourn for Logan? Not one." LG, 2011 05 14
