The ducks, and now the fern, thanks Sean. These are all very old photos. The ferns, for example, I developed a key for those in the SW in 2008 and simply neglected this photo. I've been looking for the other polypody this year, but nothing definite, only the P. virginianum and what looks like intermediates? If and when I find something outstanding, I'll collect.

Found U. resupinata yesterday! On Ponhook in the SE. Exciting!! Also, I've keyed out the Panicum dicho var. dicho on Ponhook. The spikelets were too long (just over 3 mm) for the coastal plain variety. If you have found other ways to differentiate these varieties, that'd be great to know! See you soon, take care.

The first thought to come into my mind Alain was TROUT, the next was PIKE. I would love to be able to fish this place.

Righto buttonbush. I don't think I'd write that again without putting question marks! Thanks for the note.

Here's my take on the vascular plants in this photo (please interject if need be!): Nymphaea odorata, Schoenoplectus subterminalis, Nuphar lutea, Gaylussacia baccata, Pontederia cordata and a Triadenum sp.

Hi John,

Yes, the trail starts from the eastern most point on Mulgrave (308589-4927971) which is actually on an esker. In the old guiding days before the lake was flooded, I believe the whole esker was used, and not just from this small point. There's a nice little story in Mike Parker's book "Guides of the North Woods" describing a good moose hunt here.

Anyway, the trail is easy to follow, and I'm not sure who has kept it open. Once you get to Stewart Brook after about 4km of hiking / portaging (311306-4925141), it will be best to put your canoe in and travel downstream (south) for 1km until you reach a bridge. Hiking this 1km is very difficult and the trail is very inconsistent.

From the bridge (311626-4924605), which is campsite #44 in Keji Park, hike / portage up the small hill (northeast) until you see the trail split. Go right / due east towards Frozen Ocean Lake. Half a km of hiking / portaging should get you to a warden's cabin and Frozen Ocean Lake.

A beautiful trip. Leave only footsteps.
