monttonnerre's conversations

I was stationed at Kelly Barracks from 1984-1986 while in the army as a Combat Engineer, A. CO. 547th. ENGR. BN. I loved it here, great post to be stationed. Close to downtown Darmstadt. It looks as though it has been mothballed, the ball diamond, tennis courts and picnic area is gone and made way for new construction. The depot is gone as well, did a lot of guard duty at the depot when we had duty company.

I was stationed at Hammond Barracks from Jan 1963 till Feb 1965, as a truck driver with the 308th Quarter Master Detachment. The 308th QM had Four warehouses a few klicks away about a half mile across from the QM Laundry facility. Our detachment lived on the 3rd floor of the 2nd building to the left of the main gate (if you were standing inside the installation). The low building to our left side was the chow hall. Next to that on the left was the German Army detachment and next to that was the French Army detachment. Our detachment had Class "A" passes. If we were off any day or weekend, we could stay off post as long as need be. There was no bed check at midnight for any rank. Our Barracks faced the main highway between Mannheim and Heidelberg and the 3-car Strassebahn tracks were out front too. On post if looking across the parade field was our small motor pool where we had a couple deuce and a halfs, an M-37, and a couple trailers. To the left of that was the movie theatre and the Hammond EM club (I still have an original Club menue with all the fantastic prices). The AAFES was located to the right of the parade field with the snack bar, photo lab (where a soldier could develop his own film). Small gym was in that area too. There was a mail room there too, even though our admin guy would drive up to Mannheim and pick up our mail and distribute it during afternoon formation. Our company headquarters was in Eschborne Near the Eiffle Mtns. Being a detachment and we had a lot of work to do supplying subordinate units, we did not got on field exercises. Only had one Inspector General inspection and we had one small squad bay and a few three man rooms. I remember CENTAG HQS on the other side of the main gate entrance. Once in awhile in the middle of the night we would have an "ALERT" and one of us drivers would have to walk over to the motor pool a bring a deuce over to load up the troops which at times hardly anyone was in the barracks. We had an E5 (Sgt Hazzelhurst),that lived in the barracks but he lived off post with his girlfriend and trying to get ahold of him was next to impossible. There was our acting 1stSgt that was married but I don't remember his name nor do I recollect where he lived. A Captain for a command and an Lt for the XO. Hardly anybody responded, so I just went to sleep in the truck till the alert was over and went back to my bunk. I Have the name's of a few of the guys that were there at the time and will list them the time I post. I was in that area back in 1997 after coming back from Bosnia, I was assigned as the Transportation Logistics NCOIC for the Office of Public Affairs, Campbell Barracks. The barracks at that time were devoid of any soldiers. Mostly all government civilian workers. Anyway, I am happy to have been able to post these lines and hopefully anyone reading will contact me.

My Name is Thomas A. Nieves, PFC WITH THE ARMY CALIBRATIN AGENCY, LIVE IN THE ARMY HOSPITAL OF MUNCHWEILER and I was station in DAHN 602 IN DIC.1964-1965, BEFORE I WAS IN VERDUN FRANCES AT THE BEGINNING OF 1963 THEN TRANSFER TO GERMANY TO DAHN 602 THE CAVE. MARIE TO GERMAN GIRL CHRISTA FROM PIRMASENS FOR 48 YEARS, DIE, WE HAVE 3 SONS TWO DAUGTHER AND ONE BOY. THERE NAMES SONJA, TANJA, BRIAN,

This is a building across the valley at the RCAF 3 Wing Air Base. Our Gym at Kreuzberg Kaserne was of a different architecture design adjacent to the Athletic Field facing the Post Theater. I really enjoyed my time there in 1963/64. In July, 1964, my Section was transferred to the 6912th Security Squadron at Tempelhof AB in West Berlin. WOW!!! What a great new duty station. After 9 months there, we were reassigned to Shemya AFS, Shemya Island, Alaska for a 12 month Remote Tour. Did we do something wrong?? No, just needed more experienced personnel out there on the remote island. After that I did not re-up.

I was in Pirmasens for a few months in 1967. Beautiful countryside. Parkbrau was one of my favorite beers.

I worked at the Depot and lived in Strassburg Kaserne from Aug '67 thru Mar '69. I remember this as the HQ bldg, with all the admin offices. It also contained the IT Dept., which had no budget for air conditioning, so fans blew into the rear of the "computers" to keep them cool. My parking space was under the double window on this end of the bldg. Hard to believe almost everything is gone at the Depot and the Kaserne. Sounds like lots of changes for the whole area. I guess 50 years will do that. Nevertheless, it's a beautiful area with many great memories attached.

This is the old Bitburg AB Precision Measurement Equipment Laboratory (PMEL). I was assigned there 1979-1982. We were about 10 miles from Bitburg AB and had to commute from base to the Lab but loved the woods around us to take walks in at lunch. The actual building is about 225 meters up the road from where the picture is posted.

I spent a little over 2 years here in 1968-1969. A lot of time in "the Gardens" Gauesthouse across the street. Had great times.
