The design of this structure offered a novel solution to the danger of placing a gas house in the middle of a City: It was engineered such that the mass of the thick masonry walls would direct an accidental explosion upwards through the comparatively light-weight construction of the steel frame and copper clad roof, thus theoretically sparing the surrounding neighborhood.

I know this skyline well. I lived in E. Greenbush for 4 years and my father worked for NYSERDA in the #2 agency building. Great photo.
