The design of this structure offered a novel solution to the danger of placing a gas house in the middle of a City: It was engineered such that the mass of the thick masonry walls would direct an accidental explosion upwards through the comparatively light-weight construction of the steel frame and copper clad roof, thus theoretically sparing the surrounding neighborhood.

Newspaper editor and publisher; U.S. Minister to Greece, 1901-02; Romania, 1901-02; Serbia, 1901-02; U.S. Ambassador to Austria-Hungary, 1906-10. Member, Sons of the Revolution. Died in 1911.
