What I found truely astonishing as a German is that German Soldiers from WWI are buried here beside its English enemies. They are not given less honour in their burial side. It shows great respect of the British - even for its foes.
Mind you, there were also a lot of bomb craters as well! Mayes used to be right next to the Gate and we frequently saw the QE1 and QM in the Cunard docks
the soldiers yes, but the buildings are still very much in place. They are just used for civilian purposes today. The Uni uses some buildings and small businesses some others. The outer buildings towards the South are now used as flats (see my other pictures and you will notice). I like the area with its red brick buildings. It brings some nice change to the usual Erlangen architecture.
The whole area is revived right now actually with lots of new fancy houses. The former base is kind of the center of that new housing area.
I saw this sign for the first time in 2003. The US had just invaded Iraq. I thought that was quite ironical because another George had not at all acted upon these inspiring words of this famous general and bearer of the nobel peace prize.

There use to chain link fencing here, with a small gap in it and we could get right in an play here.
