'But as the measurement of the whole earth has been proven elsewhere, in this work it is taken for granted and accepted as real what has been shown there. It is taken for granted that the universe is sphere-shaped, and spherical is the surface of the earth, and even more the earlier principle that the bodies gravitate to the center. Only this, whether it comes from the senses or common knowledge I will outline in brief in this chapter. The manifestation that the earth is spherical is evidenced both from the fact that bodies gravitate to the center and each body inclines towards its own center and by observations in the seas and heavens. And it is supported both by senses and common knowledge. It is obvious to everydody that the curveture of the sea does not allow the sailors to see lights that are not in the eye level at a distance. And they can be seen if they are higher than the eye, even though they are much farther. Similarly, if the eyes themselves are high on the air, they can see what was hidden before, as the poet (Homer) states, and this is the meaning of the words: With a sharp glance forsaw (the land), being lifted by a great wave. And to sailors approaching land, the parts of the shore are revealed more and more and what appeared to be in the beginning low becomes higher.' From Strabo's Geography. Book 1:1(20).
