Ah, friends... I stayed on Molokai this summer, and swam in this beautiful cove almost daily. It's nearly always deserted, and looks quite different during the daylight. There's a reef about 1/4 mile offshore, and local spearfishermen frequent that area by the reefs. We watched a boy of about 6 years old bring in his dinner one night (an octopus!). Much of the bottom is bumpy, though, and not too fun to walk on, but for ambience, it's the most serene place imaginable. That is, except for Papohaku Beach, on the east end of the island. The surf there is INTENSE, let me tell you, but if you're looking for a place to forget all your troubles, it's perfect for that. We heard that you could surf there, but even in the summer we thought it was too intense to risk it. North of this spot is Make Horse Beach -- unimaginably beautiful and typically deserted -- and under a cliff there is the spot where Pirates of the Caribean 3 wrapped its last two scenes -- the one with Elizabeth and Will on the beach after their "honeymoon," and if you watch after the credits are over, you see Elizabeth and her 10-year-old son waiting up on the cliff for Will to return. Pretty cool stuff. Don't be too disappointed when you see that Kaluakoi Resort is in a state of disrepair. Looks much like a ghost town, and is crawling with feral cats! The pool there is empty, and looks as if it's being used for skateboarding. It's pretty amusing -- there's still a "no lifeguard on duty" sign posted. Almost wish I'd taken a picture of it. We stayed at Ke Nani Kai. Quite nice and homey. The pool there is predictably deserted as well, and we had it to ourselves nearly every night. And talk about a starry sky! No city lights anywhere near to eff it up! I've never seen anything like it. No pollution on Molokai. No traffic. Just serenity. The ride on Mokulele Airlines from Oahu was really a trip! The pilot pulled a couple of Gs lining up for the landing! Go to Molokai Burger -- it's fantastic!
