This photo was taken in the early 80's. At that time the forest ran nearly up to the front of the house and the beautiful old barn had not been demolished and replaced with a studio. The horses are roaming free with the cattle on commonage.

This photo was taken some time in the 1950's. The house is number 3 Rue de Colonel Buchwalder. The photo was taken before the attic conversion.

The Angel brings a purple robe, a laurel wreath and a palm branch to the dying (?)soldier. It seems strange to my eyes to see this archaic symbolism mixed with a scene from a war that is now defined more by "All Quiet on the Western Front" than by the this sort of celebration of noble sacrifice.

As for the cloth, the wreath and the palm, these are all symbols of victory. Is the angel profesing a future victory for France, or is this soldier being sent to heaven rewarded as a victorious general?
