At dawn on Oct. 17,1944 the Japanese lookout station on this island reported the presence of a U.S. battleship and its destroyer escorts to all the Japanese naval stations. An hour later, it reported that U.S. troops had landed, then ceased transmitting. The 6th Ranger Battalion had cleared the island of Japs, thus Suluan became the first Philippine territory to be liberated.
