Yes, the New Mexican sky can be very blue! I think it has to do with the clear atmosphere. The sand is also quite white, but my images that have actual snow at the monument tend to show the sand as slightly less blue. The bright light and bright colors make it a photographers wonderland.

The evening at the White Sands can bring on a rose/purple hue when looking east into the 'Earth's Shadow'.
