Das Staatsratsgebäude auf der Südseite des heutigen Schloßplatzes birgt in seiner Fassade den letzten baulichen Rest der 1950 gesprengten Schloßruine: das Portal Nummer V des Schlosses von 1713, das sogenannte Lustgartenportal. Es wurde gerettet, weil Karl Liebknecht am 9. November 1918 um 16 Uhr vom unteren Balkon aus (vergeblich) die sozialistische Republik ausrief. Der Lustgarten, zu dem hin sich das Portal IV ursprünglich öffnete, befindet sich auf der Nordseite des Schloßplatzes Richtung Berliner Dom.
