Not gated. If you can find a copy of Tony Huegel's Sierra Nevada Byways, it is Tour 26. The trail starts on Sherwin Creek Rd, just off US 395 south of Mammoth Lakes. The two lakes at the end of the trail are fairly popular fishing destinations.
Watch out for the dune buggies. Don't let them run you off the road.
