A landslide would not be the correct description. The softer white lakebed deposits are being eroded after they became exposed below the harder cap(horizontal layer) and armoring (broken pieces of the cap laying on the slopes).
Good question. The Agua Fria River may be considered to be both a perennial (flowing all year round) and an intermittent river at the same time. For example, it flows approximately 1 km upstream of where I took this photo. But as the river approaches Black Canyon City (further downstream), it "disappears". That's most likely because the channel widens significantly, which allows for lateral flow and dissipation of the water into the subsurface.
