It was officially opened, by the Queen, in 1971 and is a magnificant example of engineering. I was a young child when this was being built but remember going to watch dynamiting the pennines to create the cuttings on the route of the M62; I remember the huge plant & machinery when the earthworks were in progress. my father was a lorry driver and was employed for a fair number of years on the stretch between Howden and the Yorkshire/Lancashire border. I accompanied him on Saturdays during school term, and more often during holidays. I pass that landmark many times a month and still find it awe inspiring.
