This Mobil is a TV star--it shows up in the background of the 1975 episode of Starsky & Hutch, "The Hostages" as Starsky races past on La Tiejera from Fairview.
In the first floor of the building pictured with the flag out front, is a great little collectibles and gift store called The Crystal Aerie. The charming proprieter, Nancy, has lived and worked in Niles for decades and can tell a few stories about it.
I believe this was part of the campaign by the railroad enthusiasts (who run the Sunol-Niles train) to promote "service" to downtown P-Town. It appeared about 1999, maybe later. The idea was shot down forthrightly by the P-Town citizens brigade who didn't want the potential congestion, etc.
