This is where Mr. Charles Ferge - also known as "Seldom Seen Slim" - lived. Someone has repaired the roof and added the "porch" in front. I met Mr. Ferge on July 4th, 1967, and he died just a couple of months later.
On July 4th, 1967, (my mother's birthday) I visited Ballarat with my family (father, mother, & two younger sisters) . Upon seeing the Ballarat sign, my father promptly re-named it "Balls-of-a-Rat", which I have always felt was very appropriate. We got to meet and talk with Mr.Charles Ferge - more commonly known as "Seldom Seen Slim", the ONLY resident of Ballarat, just a couple of months before he died. (You could SMELL Mr.Ferge before you saw him, he bathed only ONCE-A-YEAR, and sometimes, - according to him - not even then). :( After leaving "Balls-of-a-Rat" we headed on up to Panamint City - back when there were still a lot of the old wooden buildings intact. I made the trip up the rough canyon road to Pan. City easily in my 1967 Toyota Land Cruiser, but what amazed me was that my fathers low-slung 1967 Buick Riviera also easily made it.
Sorry, but that is NOT the mine - that is the MILL where they processed the ore from the mine. The ore was brought from the mine by aerial tram to the mill.

Hi Starmon, Thanks so much for your knowlege about the inscription. After receiving your message I got busy in Photoshop and found that you are exactly right. I was able to make it all readable (barely) except the word "kiss" in the 4th line. I tried with the marker on the left but no success, too many shadows. Maybe if I ever get real super with Photoshop I'll be able to open it up too. Thanks again, Steve
The two buildings were a brothel and the home of the Madam that ran it. Only part of the brothel still stands. My wife and I lived at cerro gordo for a few years. An experience we will never forget.

That's a "new" building - it wasn't there in 1967!
