The white brick structure in the background was the gas station. In early June 1961, two AWOL U.S. Army privates, Latham and York, murdered Martin Drenovac, the station's owner, in this building. The boarded up area at the left end of the structure is where the killing took place. Mr. Drenovac was but one victim of seven killed by the two in a cross country robbery and murder spree. The two were soon apprehended, tried and convicted, and executed in June 1965 by hanging at Lansing Prison in Kansas. They are mentioned in Truman Capote's, IN COLD BLOOD.

Just to my left as I took the shot a man was painting the same. His was more colorful and mine had better detail!
