A nice photo. While gnatman is correct about the Purple Loosestrife problem, not only in CB but all of Nova Scotia, he has misidentified the plants shown. They are actually fireweed, a successional plant native to the province. Loosestrife grows in conditions similar to those favored by fireweed and so they are often found very close to one another. The two species are also similar in appearance. These facts make them sometimes difficult to tell apart. The loosestrife flowers are smaller and very close to the stem which is square in cross-section rather than round as is the fireweed.
